Its Been a While...

Hello again!

Its been a long time since my last post... Where to start?

How about where I have been. In September I went to Ontario to visit my family. It was lovely. Still warm enough to swim in the lake, I got in there as often as possible for the 2 weeks I was there.

I love spending time with family and friends. Its always super busy when I visit because I have to see everyone in the first few days I am there, not really a vacation.

October was the usual, work and Halloween! always fun. My room mate set up a halloween tree, it was very cute and festive. I didn't do much crafty stuff, I did dress up as a sailor for a party. No home made costume this year.

November was a lot of fun. Around the 15th Band I decorated the tree, I know a bit early but I work in a craft store and I was already under 2 months of Christmas cheer. I am pretty proud of my matching wreath I whipped up a few days later.

I also attended the Festival of Trees, trees are decorated and donated by businesses then auctioned. The money went to the local Hospital. The trees were amazing. They had lots of fun stuff for kids to do too

Our roller derby team volunteered to sell raffle tickets at the "Cirque du Noel" dinner. It had a fun circus theme with lots of fun acts like contortionists, a girl on stilts, a girl eating fire, a giant unicycle, some guys doing tricks and juggling, and other fun weird stuff. We blended right in, he he.

Now to December. Oh, I love Christmas time. With no shortage of snow, Its quite festive everywhere I look. I have been wrapping presents for over a month now, I just cant wait to watch my nieces and nephew tear the paper and ribbon off. I have fun baking and decorating, but its really about family and mostly about the kids. I am happy to get some thoughtful cards and a new pair of pyjamas.

Not too long ago I received a mail art call from a certain super hero. "Mail of the Living Dead"

Thats my kind of art! Zombies are always fun. I began making one and I was hooked. The fashion models in my magazines all had amazing potential. Here are some pages from my at journal.

Vacation Journaling

Here are the pages I filled in while on our trip. I started them by glueing papers, clothing tags, a ticket, papers to write on, some library style pockets with papers in them, photos, stickers, and tapes. I did this using a "SMASH" style technique. Basically just stick it in there.

As I went along I added business cards, wrote in coloured pens, post cards, a map, and other random items. It really helped me organize my thoughts and stay positive about each ordeal as it came up.

Vacation Misadventures

Maybe we should have noticed the signs. It was obvious from the beginning, this trip was going to test us. How much can we take?

We were excited for months about this trip. House boating on Shuwap Lake in British Columbia. The boat has 3 levels (with a bar on each one) and even a hot tub! Sounds like a great time! We only knew one person on the boat. He planned the trip and this was the third year his friends have done it. They had so many people that they booked 3 of these amazing houseboats.

This is the photo from the website. Looks like a good time. (Twin Anchors website) We packed up the night before. To save time, B loaded everything in the truck. We took a 3 and half hour nap and were heading out. I put my art journal in the back seat and heard the quiet crash of shatter proof glass hit the ground.

The passenger window was broken, my purse and my bag of travel clothes were taken. (B didn't realize it's a no no to put a purse on the seat of a vehicle, especially at night. I wasn't mad, I should have noticed when he was loading the truck) My luggage was also taken and dumped in the parking lot behind our house. I found it when the police man showed up. I got B to bring it into the house, I wanted to keep looking to see if they ditched my purse too. I walked with a flashlight for a few hours. Nothing. Later my room mate found my small bag and pillow that was also taken on a bike trail (the jeans, belt and hoodie that was inside not with it) Later we walked all around the trail and looked for signs of my purse. No luck. I made posters and put them in the convenience stores nearby. I posted an ad on kijiji with the same info. The thing is I want my cards, the rest I don't care about. I can replace my wallet and purse easily. (oh no, purse shopping) I just don't want anyone using my ID anywhere.
I have never had anything stolen from me before. I didn't know how to feel. I was kinda mad...Kinda sad...Kinda "are you F'n kidding me?"... And mostly blah...

We spent the day canceling cards and getting new ones. Washing my clothes. Cleaning broken glass, replacing it. We attempted to go shopping to cheer us up and replace my jeans. We were both feeling... blah... So we went home to take a nap. Later we decided to get sushi. Now that cheered me up. (the awesome powers of sushi) I was once again excited for the vacation.

We packed everything again and set it by the door. Went to sleep and set an alarm to be up for 2am. Instead of the snooze alarm I set it again to 3:30. It didn't go off. (yet another ignored sign) We slept in until 5:30 and slowly made our way.

The beautiful drive into the mountains was cheerful and boosted our mood. We then got a boat taxi out to the houseboat.

Lovely day to spend with my boyfriend. We thought it was all looking up from here. Drinks in our hands, we introduced ourselves to new people.

When we went to put our stuff in our room, we were told we don't get one. The couches and fold out beds were taken too. "you can sleep on the deck upstairs." like we didn't get crapped on enough already. We spent a few hours on the boat trying to have a good time. We couldn't. We called the boat taxi and left.

We put our stuff in the truck and went to the pub for a drink and to get a taxi to a hotel. B had "the best caesar ever" I had water. We made some calls and found out that all of the hotels, bed and breakfasts and motels were full. Of course they are. The waitresses were nice and tried to suggest more places. We were planning to sleep in the truck. One waitress asked us "You aren't freaks or criminals, are you?" um no, we aren't. She offered to let us stay at her rental house. It was empty, no tenants until next month. Finally, things were turning around.

There was a loveseat and chair, otherwise empty. Recently renovated and clean. We decided to sleep on the floor. We were fine, a lot better than sleeping outside. I slept well considering the floor was wood.

I decided to check out the back yard in the morning. Eat some fruit and enjoy the sun. I found that creepy dog toy, made me smile. A wasp landed next to me and started to groom himself. It left my fruit and juice alone. Today is already better, yesterday I imagine it would have stung me.

Before we fled Sicamous, we stopped at the D Duchmen Dairy for some ice-cream. Delicious REAL ice-cream made in that dairy, packaged and brought up front for all to enjoy. Anyone who drives through will tell you they stop too. Too many flavors to choose from... I got an "Above Average" size waffle cone, which is 2 scoops. Each scoop measuring to around a pint. I felt like a child holding such a big cone in my hand. We wandered around and looked at the cows, calves, chickens, donkeys and a camel. After devouring our monstrous cones we continued our drive, back to Alberta.

It's a hot and sunny day. Lovely driving. We took our time and stopped for dinner in Golden. Lots of time to enjoy good conversation. I love spending time with B.

Along the way we decided to salvage what we had left of our trip my stopping in Banff and spending the night. We have never been inside the Banff Springs Hotel (just drove past to admire it) until now. We stayed in their second best grade of suite, complete with jacuzzi tub and king size bed. I felt like a princess walking into a castle.

We didn't have time for a full tour, but I took a few pictures.

We were on the 9th floor, our room had awesome views from each window. (270 view)

The Mezzanine was beautiful. I wandered off while waiting to be seated for breakfast.

Same Mezzanine, from the other side. We agreed to do the full historical tour another day. We had to head home for a BBQ out at the lake.

Driving home. We survived every mishap and disaster, without being defeated. B and I agreed that this trip proved that we can head out on a terrible and expensive vacation without getting mad at each other. It ended like a fairy tale, prince charming and a castle.

Getting Out

Beautiful day! Clear skies and a shady trail. I am so happy I got up early today. Just enough time for me to go for a skate before work. I love the bike trails around here. The grass is cut and any branches that fall are cleared away. They fill any cracks so it's nice and smooth. Perfect for rollerskating. No dodging passing vehicles, other than the occasional bike. Sometimes runners and dog walkers, but they smile and continue on their way. The trails all connect and lead to parks.

These are new and in most areas of the city. Exercise parks. They are set up to use your own weight as resistance. Push or pull ad the seat rises or swings. They are also all doubled so it's easy to workout with a friend. The mats are squishy and great to sit and stretch.

Open to all and no membership. And as you can see here, not crowded.

I get onto the trail a block away from my house and do a 30 minute brisk skate. I go down the trails only having to cross the street a few times, I pass several parks. I skate until the trail ends and head back the way I came. If I have time I stop at the exercise park for a few minutes.

Lately, I find it hard to get out. Working weird shifts, rain, or might rain. Yesterday I made it into the house as hail began to beat down. Hours later it was sunny, like it never happened.

I have been skipping rope for cardio and finishing my workout inside. Good because then I can easily escape the rain when it starts. My theory is a little exercise is better than none.
I also have missed a lit of roller derby practices. Some have been canceled lately because the floor is wet from condensation, too slippery to skate or roof leaking water on the track. Others I missed to work. (lame)

I love the days I can tie my skates and roll out the door. Get my exercise and enjoy the sun.

Keeping Busy

I haven't posted in a while, but don't worry I have been keeping busy. There has been a lot of roller derby going on lately, I will elaborate on that later.

Ah, summer time. Mosquito bites and tan lines. I am starting to feel it, along with the heat. I am not complaining, its a wonderful time. I find I am having a hard time hanging out indoors when its so nice.

I wanted to grow some herbs on the windowsill of my craft room. I started them from seeds. The window faces south east and is quite sunny. The ones in plastic pots and cups seem to be growing a lot faster. I am having a bit of trouble with the mint.

Apparently, herbs weren't the only thing I was growing when I noticed a little fungus pop up over night. I set the pot outside in the sun and it shribbled up.

Although it was a cute little mushroom, he had to go.

I was so happy when I finally made it out the the lake. My dog loves running wild on the private beach. She doesn't enjoy swimming, but she can do it. I sometimes take her in when its hot. She is mad at first, but I know she feels better.

FITNESS UPDATE!

So far, since my last post I haven't lost any weight. BUT I have been keeping up with exercising 3 or more times a week. I haven't measured lately, but I am assuming its because I am gaining muscle. (Trying to stay motivated) Lately I have been roller skating outside. I go down the bike trails because I don't have to avoid cars, just dogs, children and bikes. The city put in a bunch of exercise parks outside. They are pretty nice. The trail leads to one and I have used it a couple of times. Outdoor skating is working my core a lot more than skating inside. I have been going out the past 4 days in a row and getting up in the morning, I could feel it. Awesome! Even more of a reason to keep it up.

I have been working on my art journal and mail art a bit. Look at the big pile of art I need to address and send. Eek, it piles up so quickly. Now that the strike is finally off, I am more motivated to get on this.

I will try to post once a week, sorry for the delay.

Walk in the Park

My new fitness program is working well. Exercise every day and eat more protein. Simple enough. In a week and half I have already lost 5 pounds. It is mostly from getting off my ass. Makes me realize how lazy I can get.

I have been walking my dog to the ponds a lot. The bike trails are well groomed and it's not far from my house. Yesterdays walk was quite eventful. I half stepped off the walkway and tripped. One knee went into the mud, the other was scraped and bleeding. That's a good time to sit. I am not sure if they were mad at me or thought I had food, but a group of geese came across the pond at us.

That big one, the leader, walked out of the water and honked at me a lot. Waved his head around, in a menacing fashion, then walked back into the water. They swam away. I just sat there, snapping pictures with my phone. I figured I would not be able to outrun them, but I bet I could kick that big one if I had to.

At another pond there were several geese with babies! Fluffy and adorable!

I usually end up walking for an hour or more when I go there. It's the perfect place to let my mind wander.

2011 Steam Punk, Series 1

I adore steam punk style. It's always so intricate and interesting. I wanted to make some for myself. Now that I have my hands on the supplies for it, I want to make more. I am starting with small batches, pieces for friends, then most of it is going on Etsy. When I make more I might bring some to the market.

Simple earrings with Swarvoski crystals. They are super light weight. $7 plus shipping.

These are polymer clay pendants, glazed and ready for the next step. Wire wrapped bezels. More pictures soon!

Art Journal

Since getting into mail art, I have been neglecting my art journal. Since I have been spending lots of time exercising in the sun, it has given me time to reflect. It gave me the urge to record these thoughts in my journal. I decided to combine it with my mail art. I have scanned and used pages from my last journal in the past.

To get this effect in my pages I squirt water colour paint directly onto the page, I used a large wet brush to spread it onto both pages. When I was happy with it I put a piece of wax paper in between the pages (to prevent sticking)Then continued with the next set of pages.

This is the page with some stuff added. I ripped out pictures from magazines, pages of an old well read book and scrap book paper. I like the torn edges. Cut edges have a different effect, try both. I put gesso on the pictures lightly then went over the edges again. I used paint all over the page to blend it into the background. I set a dye cut onto the page and stencilled paint around it. I saved the cutout for a future project. I used pens and markers to highlight and trace areas. I even used my fingers to apply paint. Get into it, Get Messy!

Here are some backgrounds I started that you can print and use in your art. I love the veiny look from the wax paper.Thank you :)

It's been a while.

Hey people! I know I haven't updated you for a while. I have been thinking a lot. Thinking about art and crafts. Thinking about jewelry and my classes. Thinking about sewing and mending. Thinking about my fitness and diet. Thinking about roller derby. Thinking about how my "To Do List" is getting crazy long. Yep. I have become a little overwhelmed. Usually, that makes me get lazy and procrastinate. NOT THIS TIME! I am going to include you all in my daily activities, hopefully not too boring.
I need to get back into the 365 routine. It's not hard, it's just easy to set it aside for "later". Which is now.
My workspace is a little cluttered with stuff for jewelry.

As far as my jewelry classes go, I have cancelled a few lately. I put up lots of new advertising around the store and updated the books. It hasn't made much improvement.
I have new steam punk inspired pieces on the go. It's very free form, forgiving, and anything goes. I find this type of creating liberating. Like mail art, no rules.

Keys and gears, easily customized and all one of a kind.

I also took a serger course this week to learn to use my new toy.
I have some awesome ideas. Sew, sew, sew... Pictures soon!

Now for the fun stuff. Diet and fitness. I need it because I over eat like it's an event. I got on a program that's geared towards derby girls. High protein with 5 meals a day. Also regular exercise. I already eat 5 or more meals a day, it's the other stuff I need to work on.

Today I jogged around the block with my dog. Did sit ups, planks, jumping jacks, pushups and a bunch of stretching in the yard. Then took the dog for another walk.

I have been too lazy for the past few months. Roller derby practice twice a week is not enough for me. I think if I start acting more like an athlete I might feel more like one. I will share my progress. I am open to suggestions.

Freaky Friday Double Header - *UPDATED!

Thats right! Another bout this month. I survived last Saturday's game so I guess its time for another. The second Nightshades game as a team! I am so proud to be skating with these ladies. Its going to be very exciting! We kicked ass in Winnipeg and now we are ready to do it at home.

There will be a coed game afterwards. RED VS BLACK. They usually come up with very interesting names for the teams, I will update as soon as I know. I will also update with pictures and scores! Wish me luck!

UPDATE!

Nightshades take the win in this nail biting, extremely close game! It was exciting, our first home game together. Considering that it was a holiday, our crowd was around 1,000 fans. Which included a very vocal Heavenly Rollers section. Although it was chaotic and confusing at times, we worked together as a team and fought hard for our win. I am so proud to be a part of this team. I know we will grow and become an even more amazing force.

I also would like to say that the Heavenly Rollers are great girls.

It was nice to chat with them at the after party.

WE TOOK THE WIN!

It was a very fun, hard hitting game. (I even made a couple of good hits!) Hellion has a lot of taller and bigger girls. When lining up next to most of the Belladonnas, it looks like our short stature would cause us a disadvantage. After the second jam it was clear that it was not the case. The pack pace was pretty fast and sometimes chaotic. Our strategy and teamwork won this game. Some of our fans heard people talking about us being an intimidating and agile team. I agree.

I hope we can get our hands on a video of this game. I really would love to see it myself. When I find a group picture I will update this post again.

Craft Room Relocation...

My incomplete desk and packed closet...

Since we are getting 2 more room mates, I gave up the bedroom I was using in favour of the basement. I do share my new space with the laundry washer and dryer, but I can handle that. My bedroom and bathroom are also in the basement, so now I officially inhabit the entire basement! I kinda feel silly that I hadn't thought of it before. Maybe thats because it was filled with storage boxes, an extra washer and dryer and lots of other things. I cleaned and sterilized the room and moved right in! I think it flows a lot better and its easier to get to everything.

AFTER:

Two big windows let in tons of natural light all day! Love it. See the fish in the vase? He's a Beta, no name yet. Suggestions?
The desk is now complete! Perfect for my sewing machine and serger!
Storage is a bit cluttered looking, I am putting the empty boxes that are on top of the shelf into the crawl space soon. Then I plan to put a curtain up on the shelf to make it look a bit better. I am not in a hurry, it functions well as it is.

Thats my new space and all of its awesomeness. Now to get back to crafting...

Yesterday's Mail Art!

Here are the cards I made yesterday. I was on a roll! Made 3 right before a roller derby scrimmage practice and 3 after. I posted them last night on Mail Art 365. There is a lot going on for me right now. Roller derby 3 or more times a week, teaching 2 or 3 jewelry classes a week, working 2 days a week, and babysitting a few times a week. Oh also this month I have 2 roller derby games! No posters for these games yet. I will take pictures and keep you all posted. Anyway, I am now back into routine and I can squeeze in mail art now that my craft room is all moved and put away. Pictures right away!

Worked on this for a few hours today! Sorry for the absence on the mail art scene. All of a sudden real life crept up on me and dragged me out of my creative dream world. I hate being too busy to be creative. Its #5 on my priority list, under food, sleep, family, and roller derby. Phew, I had a bit of time to make some jewelry and from that sprang a few orders. Which is great! I am so excited for the market to start in May. I might reprint some of my mail art and sell them as postcards... good idea??? Hmm, we will see.

I have a few pieces of mail art on the go today! Featuring my new artistamps. Hopefully I will post them tonight or tomorrow morning.

Roller Derby: Red River Deep Freeze

Another awesome weekend of roller derby. The RDRDA Nightshades headed across a couple of provinces to play the Murder City Maidens.

*Winnipeg Roller Derby League

The third floor of the convention center was dark, with spotlights on the track. The start of the game was postponed 20 minutes to get over 2000 people into the stands. As the Nightshades were introduced, only a hand full of people cheered while low booing came from the crowd. Smiling and waving, it didn't shake our confidence. We were ready to play! When the Maidens entered the track the crowd exploded into a frenzy. They have an amazing fanbase. This is the largest crowd I had ever seen at a roller derby bout.
It was an exciting game! The score was close for most of the game. Big hits, pile ups, and penalties. One Maiden's skate flew into the "suicide seating" section after a hit from Nightshades Gunpowder Gertie.
The fans kept their passion for their local girls known. So much excitement during this bout, the refs scolded our team for being " too intense". When I considered this as on our best behavior. No major injuries or players ejected from the game. Both teams played hard! We were so pleased to roll away with this victory! Especially since it was the Nightshades first game.

FINAL SCORE:
Murder City Maidens: 111
Nightshades: 133

The game was featured in the Sunday Winnipeg Free Press. Full 2 pages.

I am so proud of RDRDA's Nightshades! I hope to play many more games with these girls.

Jewelry

I have enjoyed making jewelry for many years. I remember knotting friendship bracelets in elementary school with friends. I dream up and design pieces all of the time. Since I started creating my own beads and pendants, my jewelry making became a bit consuming. Ideas would keep me up at night. I solved that by writing and sketching them down.

I recently started teaching jewelry classes at Michaels Arts and Crafts. So far there are 8 different classes and there are more on the way! I really enjoy teaching. Not just beading but anything really.

I do sell my designs at farmers markets and online. I have many more designs sketched out and dreamed up. Check my Etsy, I will post pictures soon!

Creative Creature

This is a painting by Creative Creature. I find her work so inspiring. I have known her for many years and I value her opinions and suggestions when it comes to my work. It takes a very close friend to tell you the truth about your art. Most people just say "its great!" "you are talented", which is nice to hear, but not what I am looking for when I ask. She is the only person that sees it the way I do, "its missing something" or "get rid of that". Maybe we think to similarly? Maybe we collaborated over so many years that we understand each others style and intent without having to explain. Not sure what it is. I do know that I admire her as an artist and a person.

This is #65 of 365. Making mail art is so freeing! I used to journal and create little things and think, now what? I have a bunch of stuff around, piling up with nowhere to go. Now I make it and send it away! I always enjoy what I receive, so I know it will go to a happy home maybe even be reused or added to a collection. I put mine up on the wall and when its filled I remove them and put them in a scrapbook. I use photo corners to attach them. Sometimes a dot of glue for envelopes, they tend to fall out.

Stark Raving Plaid Update!

It was an amazing game! The Belladonnas train hard and their work paid off at the game last night! The Lassies played hard and hit hard. It was a fight for every point, for each team. The Belladonnas had solid defence. I believe that was the main reason in the gap for the final score. They also ran their offensive plays flawlessly. The Lassies did not make it easy for them in any way.

I stood behind the bench watching, screaming, cheering and pacing. Sometimes acting as water girl. The venue was packed! Over 1000 people packing the stands, seats, and some left standing. Roller derby is getting a lot more popular around here. Some found the score confusing but one thing was clear, the Belladonnas rocked it!

Roller Derby

This is a photo from the SK808 tournament in Hawaii, this past January. Not very glamourous, but its a clear shot of me, blue shirt at the back with striped helmet cover. I have a lot of derby lately. Its hard for it to not take over my life completely. I have been part of the RDRDA league since December 2008. Having been around for 2 years, I have a great understanding of the game but I am nowhere near the best. I hover somewhere around the middle. I think it is because I am not an athletic person. I have never really been involved in team sports or what my fall under "typical sports". I have enjoyed sailing since I was 12 years old. I love boats and water. While in high school I did biathlon with Cadets for 3 years or so. I do hit the gym, once and a while, but I do not consider myself athletic at all. Some girls on my team are amazing! They have experience on skates, hockey and figure skating, and they move into the game naturally and are a lot faster than I am. Although I am confident in my skills, I strive to improve.

I want to be faster! I find it difficult. Maybe new wheels will help? Mine are worn and around a year old. Maybe more practices will help? I go between 2 and 4 times a week. I push myself to my limits each time. I decided to include my blog followers in my Roller Derby journey on the flat track.

This Saturday the Belladonnas are playing the Thrashing Lassies. I am an alternate for this game. I am very excited to watch. I had a break from the Belladonnas for a couple of months while travelling and doing other things. I am very glad to be back. This team is fierce and their practices are kicking my ass. The game is well matched and will be amazing to watch!

Then next weekend the NightShades are playing Murder City Maidens.

I am very excited to play in this game! A lot of the Nightshades are on the newer side of playing, but I know we will do well! Some friends are travelling from out of town to watch me play as well as some Winnipeg locals. Its so nice whens friends come to watch! They better cheer loud.

I will keep you updated on my games and things from now on. At first I was just going to focus on this as an art and craft blog, but there is so much more to me! I am doing a lot when I am not crafting. I hope this wasn't to long winded. More to post soon!

Day 9 Hanauma Bay, again!

We had so much fun snorkeling that we are going again!

While waiting for the bus we walked down Waikiki. So nice out. Cloudy but very warm.

I saw a lit more fish this time around. I used up my film so fast. I think if I got snorkeling somewhere again I will get a digital water proof camera.

More Adventures in Oahu!

So I did the Sk808 tournament on day 4. It was lots of fun. I met some awesome girls and played hard! I got some nice blocks in, I think. No pictures yet, they are on a friends camera, I will post them at home.

Day 5: Team Awesome Camp
The camp was going pretty good, but the sun got to me. I had lunch early and hid in the shade. During that time one of the girls from our team broke her leg in 2 places. She went to the hospital and had surgery. She is in high spirits and doing well. After that we re-evaluated our trip and decided to skip the second day of camp.

Day 6: Rainy Day= Shopping
We explored a bit on our way to Walmart. We bought a lot of coffee and snacks. Wandered a bit and checked out other shops. Then we planned the next few days.

Day 7: Polynesian Cultural Center
We didn't explore the park. Instead we visited our dear friend in the hospital. She was doing well. It was very nice to see her.

I took a picture of friends in front of this waterfall and I fell backwards onto a stone bench. It broke under me and I continued to fall onto the ground. Embarrassing.

The luau was delicious. The entertainment was great. Lots of fun. I recommend it to anyone the goes to Oahu.

Hawaiian food is so good. Poi is kinda an acquired taste. I could get used to it tho.

Day 8: Another Rainy Day= More Shopping!
We took the free trolley to Hilo Hattie. It was interesting. We saw the different styles of Hawaiin shirt prints throughout the years.
I bought lot of candy. Yum.

We also checked out one side of the Ala Moana mall. So big.
In the evening we went to Dave and Busters.

Deal or No Deal, I didn't do well with that one. Lol. I rocked Wheel of Fortune. I met up with my cousin. It was so nice to see her.

It rained last night. I didn't hear it but there were puddles around. We went to Seaside restaurant for breakfast. I got coconut pancakes. AMAZING!!!

It was very bright outside.the view is amazing.

We went parasailing today! So much fun! The view is awesome.

Craft Room Redo

So for Christmas I got a serger. (it's type of sewing machine) I have nowhere to set it up. The only thing to do is redo my craft room.

French Memory Board

Here is the tutorial I promised you a while ago. I didn't get to it before my trip... sorry. Anyway, lets start!

Supplies:
canvas or wooden frame
cotton batting
fabric
staple gun
ribbon
buttons, needle and thread OR brads and X-acto knife
scissors

Cut a piece of fabric and 2 layers of batting to fit your frame. Measure so there is 2 or 3 inches allowance on all sides.

Starting with the corners, fold fabric over and staple to the frame. Continue all around.

Lay ribbon across in a way you like, I used very narrow ribbon so there are a lot of rows. If you use wider ribbon you won't need as many.
Alternate the directions to add interest.

If you are using buttons, arrange buttons on crossed sections and sew into place.

I used brads, I poked a small slit into the crossed sections and poked them through. Spread out tabs on the other side.

And there it is!
A lovely, custom memory board.

Carving Stamps

I am really into personalizing. I try to make most things I use. I have been carving stamps for over a year. This same technique can also be called "linocuts" or "block printing". I reserve those terms more for large scale artist prints. Which can be very detailed and amazing. Although making my own stamps is amazing, I like to just call them stamps.

I like to use Speedball products. I picked them up at the Michaels store that I work at.
I am sure that these tools can be purchased online if you have trouble finding them.

Supplies:
Paper
Pencil
Speedball carving tools
X-acto knife
Carving block (these can be brown, pink, white or ivory)
*****You can also carve those white vinyl earasers
Stamp Ink

Step #1
Decide the size of your stamp. Sketch the design in pencil on a piece of paper.
***NOTE: you can draw directly on the block, BUT it will be reversed when its used AND its hard to erase if you mess up.

Step #2
Cut out the design. Use the back of the carving tool to burnish the design onto the block.

Step #3
Use knife and gauge to carve out the negative space. I like to work with a piece of paper under my block so I can easily get rid of the scraps. It can get messy. Rinse your block to wash off all tiny bits.
***NOTE: you can also carve out the positive space for a more solid block effect.
******NOTE: do one or the other

Step #4
Ink the stamp test it. There are may be more you need to carve away that you won't see until you test.

Step #5
Enjoy!!!!

So I took a trip to visit my boyfriend at work. I flew and drove across a couple provinces to get here, the middle of nowhere. Although he is working the entire time I am here, it is nice to spend a couple of hours a day with him. Its like a vacation from everything. I have a giant bin of craft supplies and lots of time to spare.
As you can tell from the picture, most everything is covered with snow. Under that snow are fields. I loved how the sun broke through the clouds for a brief moment. Before that the sky and ground blended together seamlessly.
I will post my creations soon! We just got internet today at the place we are staying. I am so happy to be re-connected.
It took me hours yesterday to post on Mail Art 365 from my cellphone.
Now, I must venture out into the cold.

Getting ready...

Yep, I am getting my mail art ready to go everywhere with me! I have been planning to put this together since I started making mail art. At first I was looking for something in stores, but nothing worked. I used the leftover fabric from the dress I made for an 80's party months ago. I
love it and I have a lot left still.

It is kinda boxy with an envelope style with a button closure. There is velcro on it as well, to keep it more secure.

Some of the things inside are:
*pre-cut 4" by 6" card stock, doubled
*stencils
*scissors
*glue stick
*double sided tape
*podge
*paint brushes
*couple stamps
*ink (for stamping and writing)
*calligraphy pen, extra nibs
*waterproof felt markers

Holiday Baking

I am getting some holiday baking done. Bringing these tasty treats to the annual roller derby Christmas party. It should be a good night. I have been making mail art all day! I have sent out 7 pieces today. It is so much fun. The weather was terrible out today. So much misty fog making it icy out. I left my house briefly, spent the rest of the day cozy warm in my craft room. I did not want to venture out into the coldness. Its beautiful to look outside the window, its a different story being out there.
